Rocket City Food Blogger Tour- Hildegard’s Biergarten

Stop two on the Rocket City Food Blogger’s Tour for Huntsville Restaurant Week was Hildegard’s Biergarten off of University Drive. If you want to see stop one, click right here!

Hildegard's Exterior

This is actually the second Hildegard’s location, the first being on Whitesburg Drive in Huntsville. This new restaurant is located on Heathland Drive, behind the Subaru dealership and Casa Blanca.

Hildegard's Interior

When I heard we were going to Hildegards for this food blogger’s tour, I was so excited. What an amazing way to pay homage to Huntsville’s German links! If you didn’t know, Huntsville is the “Rocket City” that it is today thanks in very large part to Wernher von Braun, who came to Huntsville from Germany in the 1950s to work on rocket development. Furthermore, I had never been to Hildegard’s!

I didn’t know much about German food, but the owner Sabina was so helpful with describing the different dishes. Also, I didn’t have to decide what to try! She brought out Polish and bratwurst sausages, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, schnitzel, goulash, and a homemade ground sirloin cabbage roll to share family-style. I had never had any of it (well, except mashed potatoes) and was so pleasantly surprised. I had never heard of a cabbage roll in my life, but I am going to forever sing its praises. If I had to choose a favorite, I would go with the goulash. It’s described as “tender beef tips in gravy over a bed of spaetzel,” but it should really be called “unicorn magic and rainbows (beef flavored) on a plate.”

I should also mention that they have a great selection of German beers. I went with the Weihenstephaner hefeweizen, which was delicious as always.

Confession time: I have to admit that while I was stuffing my face, I totally dropped the ball on snapping photos of the other dishes, so make sure you check out the other bloggers in this series for their amazing photos!

Just when I thought that I couldn’t eat another bite, Sabina brought out the desserts. Her mother makes every single dessert that comes out of the restaurant, which is amazing. She brought out Black Forest cake, German chocolate cake, blueberry cheesecake, and apple strudel.

By the way, I should mention that the sausage platter, the cabbage roll, and the apple strudel are on the list of specials that Hildegard’s is running for Restaurant Week!

Hildegard’s really is an amazing hidden gem. You can taste the comfort in each dish and see the love for her craft on Sabina’s face. As we were getting ready to leave, a customer who had been singing the praises of the strudel came over to make sure we had had a good experience. You can tell that the Hildegard’s regulars love eating the food as much as Sabina loves making it.

Make sure you check out all the amazing specials that Hildegard’s has to offer for Huntsville Restaurant Week, running from August 14-23!
