Rocket City Food Blogger Tour- LawLers Barbecue

Huntsville, Alabama is known for a few things: The Space and Rocket Center, our affiliation with NASA, and our Southern hospitality, to name a few. However, one aspect of Huntsville life often goes overlooked- our food! When I was growing up in the Huntsville area, the joke among my friends was that there was nothing to do for fun in Huntsville but eat. While I’m glad to say I no longer feel that way, going out to eat at some of our local restaurants still ranks high on my list of fun activities in the area. Therefore, when the Huntsville/Madison County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau asked me to take part in the Food Blogger’s Tour for Huntsville Restaurant Week, I jumped at the chance!

What’s the deal with Restaurant Week?

Huntsville Restaurant Week is an annual celebration of Huntsville/Madison County’s restaurant offerings that runs this year from August 14-23. Over 60 restaurants are participating, each offering amazing specials, and lunch and dinner deals. Lunches are set at $5, $10, and $15, while dinners are set at $10, $20, and $30. There are also a few exciting events going on, like a whiskey tasting and lunch and Homegrown Huntsville’s Dine and Dash.

One last thing to mention is that the CVB is coordinating a social media contest. Each day during Restaurant Week, you could be in the running for gift certificates to some awesome local restaurants. All you have to do is post about Restaurant Week using #DineHSV to win!

All the information you could possibly want on Huntsville Restaurant Week can be found at huntsville.org/restaurantweek, including information on participating restaurants, event dates and details, and how to enter the social media contest.

Who all was there?

Now to get onto the Food Blogger’s Tour! I was so thrilled to join several local and non-local bloggers on three stops over three days. My fellow food bloggers were:

Christy Jordan: Southern Plate

Constance Smith: Cosmopolitan Cornbread

Sarah Belanger: The Jealous Crumpet

Stephenie Walker: RocketCityMom

Bo Williams: Rocket City Mom

Phillip Fryman: Southern Fatty  (Nashville)

Clint Cantwell: Grillocracy (Memphis)

So make sure you go and check out their blogs for their takes on Restaurant Week, because I can almost guarantee their photos are better than mine!

Where did you go?

Stop one on our tour was LawLers Barbecue on Hughes Road in Madison.
Lawlers BBQ exterior
LawLers was founded in 1978 by brothers Phillip and Jerry Lawler and has since expanded to eight- almost nine!-locations in Tennessee and Alabama. To ensure a consistent product throughout all their locations, all of their barbecue is smoked in their USDA-approved facility in Tennessee and delivered to the individual restaurants. And their meat is still hand-picked instead of worked by a machine!
Stephanie Ordering at Lawlers
I didn’t actually know this, but 2015 is the year of Alabama barbecue, and LawLers has been nominated for the Alabama Barbecue Battle. I can definitely see why. When it came time to order, I definitely had to take some time to make my choice. In the end, I went with the famous Stuffie Potato.
Lawlers Stuffie Potato
This. potato.was.massive. And so delicious! It is a one-pound potato before they even add the toppings, which in my case was turkey, cheese, sour cream, chives… basically the works. I had to go with the obvious side item-mac and cheese- as well.
Pulled Pork Plate at Lawlers
A few other meals chosen were the pulled pork combo with mac and cheese and cole slaw, the barbecue nachos, and some ribs. Yum!
Ribs and Nachos at Lawlers
I also should mention that my food was ready by the time I got my fountain drink. Insane! They make their food all to order, but they really stick with their slogan: “Cooked slow, served fast!”
LawLers has several locations running specials during Restaurant Week, so find the one nearest to you and let them “tickle you pink!”

P.S. How cute is their “spokespig” Tasty?
Tasty the Pig!

I love the picture of you and Tasty. So glad you were part of it this year. I love these kinds of events where you get to spend time with other bloggers, learn about one another and have fun. And I learned some great photography tips from Phillip – like magician’s wax! 🙂
