Trend Alert: Crushing on Velvet

Every now and then I’ll take a peek at the latest fashion trends to keep myself in the know and am surprised at how many things I hate. #Sorrynotsorry, but you won’t see me run out and buy fringe-cuffed jeans, chunky mules, and a pajama shirt anytime soon. However, there have been some really wearable trends pop up recently that I have been loving! One of them is velvet. I love how versatile velvet is; it can be casual, chic, or even couture. I wish I had the courage to deck myself out in head-to-toe velvet, but for now, I’ll have to satiate my craving with the few pieces I’ve picked up recently.

The Shirt

I have been SO impressed with the Who What Wear x Target collection! I went on and on about their gorgeous suede jacket, and now they’ve done it again. As soon as I saw this velvet cami hanging in the store, I had to try it on. It has adjustable spaghetti straps and a delicate lace trim, and it falls a little lower than many other camisoles I own. It’s super comfortable and hides my post-Thanksgiving feast tummy! I love the contrast and extra dimension it provides when layered under a cardigan or jacket. I’ve paired it with my (very old) Mossimo cotton moto jacket (similar here) and Old Navy Rockstar jeans for a casual day out shopping with my sister.

The Bag

Now that I’ve fallen for velvet, it seems like it pops up everywhere! I had been ogling velvet handbags from Rebecca Minkoff and Michael Kors but cringing at the price tag, so when I stumbled across this little beaut in Old Navy, I was thrilled! It has an adjustable cross-body strap and two zippered sections, plus an extra non-zippered, expandable section in the middle. It comes in a few color options, but I love this wine color for this time of year. As an added bonus, this bag is on sale for less than $20 right now!

The Choker

Now I know that chokers are kind of a divisive trend right now. Some people love them, some people are amused by them, and some people can’t imagine spending money on a shoelace to tie around your neck. I’m kind of a mixture of those three types of people. Chokers can be really cute, and take me back to the 90s in a good way, but I would never spend a ton of money on one. Sometimes I’ll layer this black velvet choker with a longer, dainty gold necklace. I picked up a two-pack of these simple velvet chokers at Claire’s a while ago. While no longer available online, here are a few similar options: 1 // 2 // 3

The Shoes

I’ve saved the best for last. Do you ever have that moment in a store when you come around the corner and angels start to sing as light glows from something on display? I 100% had that moment with these Diba Danica boots at DSW. It just so happened that my birthday was just around the corner, so I justified this totally not necessary purchase by saying it was a gift to myself. I have ZERO regrets. These stunners have a thick 3″ heel, a zipper closure, and a subtle pattern to add some dimension to the black velvet. Maybe it’s just me, but I see a kind of Baroque/Western mashup, no? Throwing these on is the easiest way ever to take your outfit from casual to girls night out in about five seconds.

The +1

This was definitely an afterthought as I headed out to shoot these photos, but I’m wearing the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella. This is definitely one of those universally-flattering shades that anyone can pull off.

Are you crushing on velvet the way I am?

Who What Wear x Target is the best! Love it all. I can’t get myself to wear velvet for some reason, but that bag looks like it would add a great touch of velvet to any outfit. Thanks for sharing your picks 🙂

I love the subtle ways you’ve introduced velvet to your winter outfits – so stylish! I adore the velvet ankle boots, though velvet chokers will always have a special place in my heart haha 🙂

That choker is so pretty. I agree, I wouldn’t spend much money on one, unless it was good quality and a nice metal. And I can’t believe that bag is from Old Navy!

Wow, such a great look! Especially love the bag and the boots <3 I love the velvet trend on other but I hate to touch the fabric – so unfortunately I have to stay away from this trend 😀

What about following each other? 🙂
