Just a few months into the year (lol) I’ve been setting monthly resolutions for myself. In July I tried to train myself to wake up just a liiitle bit earlier during the work week, in August I tried out the Keto diet, and this month I’ve been learning hand lettering. Although I don’t really think of myself as artistic, I’ve dabbled a bit in the past with artistic-ish things, like bullet journaling and making stickers for my planners and found them really fun! But I’ve always thought my journal entries would look a lot better if I had a little bit of hand lettering experience.
The book I’ve been using is Lettering and Modern Calligraphy: A Beginner’s Guide, which I bought on Amazon. It teaches you all the basics for a few different font styles, and gives you practice pages in the book you can try it out for yourself. I’ve been using the Tombow 62038 Fudenosuke Brush Pen for the script and the Micron-08 for finer lines.
It’s taken a bit of time to get used to the movements of the brush pen, since it’s my first time trying it. It’s all about the pressure, and sometimes it’s hard for me to get that right. I will also say that I have a bad habit of writing WAY too fast in my normal life, which doesn’t do well in hand lettering either! I’m working on slowing things down a little.
There are also sections at the back of the book to practice designs. These style of words would look so pretty in my bullet journal, so I’m going to keep practicing them. Maybe once I feel more comfortable with my hand lettering, I’ll start incorporating some watercolors, too!
Do you do hand lettering? What are your favorite tools?
I love this! I’ve been using the Fudenosuke for a few months now and it took me a while to get used to the feeling of the brush tip bending because I felt like I was damaging it. I might have a look into buying this, it would definitely help with my lettering!

Same here with the pen! I may have to try out a more brushy, flexible one next!
