A Conversation About my Pieces

When comparing my jewelry collection to other people’s, it seems small and kind of random. Well, that’s because it is. But a lot of my pieces have interesting stories behind them that I am reminded of when I wear them. I thought I would give you a small peek inside my jewelry box and tell you a few of the stories behind some of my favorite pieces.

coin necklace

On a family vacation to England when I was 12, we visited a lot of castles. I think that I picked this necklace up at Windsor Castle west of London. It was a cheap little souvenir, sold on a piece of cardstock inside a cellophane wrapper, but I wear this necklace more than any other I own. After some internet sleuthing, I discovered that it is a replica of a 14th-century Quarter Noble coin.

And seriously, I wear this at least three out of seven days a week.

gramp's watch

This is the watch I wear every day. It was actually my maternal grandfather’s watch.

Gramp

I’m not sure when he got it or how long he wore it, but he was a geologist with a taste for adventure and the kindest heart in the world. I love wearing it because it makes me think of him!

Black Opal trio

This set is very special to me. It’s black opal and was a gift from my parents for my high school graduation.  I treasure it and used to only break it out on special occasions, like my college graduation.

Now that I’m a bit older and more mature, I think I trust myself to wear it more and not loose any of the pieces!

bee earrings

These earrings are SO cute. They were a gift from my very good friend/bosom buddy Samantha. She and I actually started out as pen pals in 2010 and steady grew closer throughout the years. I think of her as one of my closest friends and cherish her dearly! She and I both love bees and wish we could keep them, so she sent these earrings to me in a package. I always get lovely compliments when I wear them. I think they are from Sequin, but I’m not 100%. Samantha used to work at Sequin, so I have a wonderful collection of their bracelets and a necklace or two that she’s sent me over the years! Love them.

travel rings

Lastly, I want to feature two of my rings. When I travel, I try to pick up either rings or scarves as souvenirs. I like to be reminded of my travels, and bringing back something that I can use for a long time is a great way to do that. I picked up the knot ring on a trip to Ireland with my dad in 2010. We did a cycling tour through the southwest and it was honestly one of the best things I have ever done. I loved spending the time with my dad, and getting to see the breathtaking Irish scenery on bicycle was honestly the best way to do it. I’ve mentioned this trip before, but the company we went with was Cycling Safaris and we did the West Cork and Kerry trip. I was so proud of myself for completing about 160 miles on bike, and really wanted something to remind me of the trip, so I picked up this knot ring in Killarney. I wear this one A LOT.

ireland coasting

My maternal grandparents met in Peru, so when I was a teenager our family took a trip to Cusco and Lima with my Nona. It was such a wonderful trip. My Nona went paragliding with us, we visited Machu Picchu, we ate cuy, and my Nona even pointed out the spot that my grandfather proposed! In Cusco, after we had gotten over our altitude sickness with Coca tea, we went to a local market to do some souvenir shopping. With my grandmother’s help, I haggled with a native lady and bought this gorgeous silver and turquoise ring. We were at the airport ready to fly back to Lima when I realized I had left it in the hotel shower. I was devastated. However, the tour guide that we had hired to help us with the logistics of traveling within the country offered to take a taxi back with me and my sister Megan and collect the ring. My parents let us (that’s trust, y’all) and the hotel had kept the ring for me! Sidenote, on the way I saw the BIGGEST dog I have ever seen in my life and my sister thought it was a horse.

That’s a photo of my gorgeous grandparents in Peru!

So those are the stories behind a few of my jewelry pieces. I hope you enjoyed this post, and if you did, let me know! I’ve got a few more pieces I could talk about in the future, if this is interesting to people. Do you have any jewelry pieces with interesting stories?

xoxo Katie
