The Best True Crime Shows on Netflix to Binge This Presidents Day

The Best True Crime to Binge This Presidents Day | Katie Actually

This weekend is President’s Day, and what’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Presidents? Currently, True Crime. (🙊)

I’m definitely a True Crime junkie. From books, to documentaries, to podcasts, to TV shows, I soak it all up. Every now and then I ask myself if it’s something I should be worried about… like, is it normal for me to enjoy shows about murder?? But then I talk to my friends and almost all of them either agree or can understand my obsession.

If you find yourself in the mood to just veg out this three-day weekend, I’ve got a few True Crime suggestions for you, all available right now on US Netflix.

The Investigator- Season 1

Katie’s Score: 5 stars
Length: 4 episodes, about 45 minutes each
Synopsis: A woman goes missing and hasn’t been seen since 1985, though her husband is serving a life sentence for her murder. This crazy story will have you gripping the edge of your seat during plot twist after plot twist.

Abducted in Plain Sight

Katie’s Score: 5 stars
Length: 1hr 30min
Synopsis: This is an INSANE, and I mean INSANNNNNEEE true story of a little girl who was abducted and brainwashed by a family friend. I don’t want to say too much, but it involves aliens, affairs, nuns, and so much more. Truly a shocker.

Evil Genius

Katie’s Score: 5 stars
Length: 4 episodes, each about 50 min long
Synopsis: Holy cow, what a WILD ride. A man walks into a bank with a bomb locked around his neck and robs the place. What happens next questions culpability, conspiracy and motive and will leave you reeling.

Making a Murderer

Katie’s Score: 4.5 stars
Length: 2 seasons, 10 episodes each
Synopsis: Season one of this show was an absolute KNOCKOUT. It will forever be up there among the best true crime stories I’ve ever watched. It follows the story of Stephen Avery, wrongfully convicted of rape, released, and then arrested for murder. This story has SO many twists, and will almost certainly leave you either yelling at your screen or with your jaw on the floor. Season two is still intriguing, if a little less interesting (hence the 4.5 instead of a 5).

Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Katie’s Score: 4 stars
Length: 4 episodes, each about an hour long
Synopsis: Most people have heard of Ted Bundy, but he was a little before my time. This docuseries recaps his reign of terror, including descriptions of the crimes and an in-depth look at the psyche of one of America’s most infamous serial killers.

The Innocent Man

Katie’s Score: 4 stars
Length: 6 episodes, each about 50 min long
Synopsis: A show based on a John Grisham book based on a true story… this can get a little confusing. It follows two murder cases in Oklahoma that have complicated, twisted, and convoluted stories of confession, retraction, false imprisonment, and potentially not false imprisonment. I will say that the mother of one of the murder victims is a national treasure and you’ll love her.

The Keepers

Katie’s Score: 4 stars
Length: 7 episodes, each about an hour long
Synopsis: I was really looking forward to this series when I heard it was from the same people that gave us Making a Murderer. This covers the disappearance and murder of a popular catholic nun, a teacher in Baltimore. Coverups, conspiracies, secrets, and more await you in this series. I found it left me wanting a tiny bit more than Making a Murderer (season 1), though, so I only gave it 4 stars.

The Staircase

Katie’s Score: 3 stars
Length: 13 episodes, each about 50 min long
Synopsis: This is an interesting case- successful woman (and wife of famous author) found dead at the bottom of the stairs, but was she pushed or did she fall? There are a few twists in this one, and you really get unprecedented access to the family, especially the accused husband. I only gave it three stars though because it seemed to go on forever.

These are just a few of the amazing true crime options on Netflix. One I didn’t add to the list but is an almost daily staple for me is Forensic Files. There are SO FREAKIN MANY episodes on Netflix, and they cover some of the most interesting forensic cases ever. Fair warning though, some of them show some pretty graphic photos.

What are your favorite true crime shows on Netflix?
