This weekend isn’t special, or busy, or incredibly exciting. But sometimes those are the best weekends, in my opinion. I love meeting up with old friends and exploring new places, but I also really thrive on my me time. I work hard during the week, so I feel like my best-spent weekends end with a clean house, a full fridge, freshly painted nails, and a glass of wine. It’s easy to get wrapped up in what you think someone’s life looks like if you only know them through the lens of what they publish online or on their social media pages. Lots of big time bloggers seem to be rushing off to sponsored trips to Bali and Paris Fashion Week all the time, in between beauty launches and expensive workout classes. Obviously, that truly is a part of their life, but there is so much more that happens on the slow days. I am by no means rushing off to Bali, but in an effort to show more of what my life looks like on a normal, non-exciting weekend, I thought I’d share a little snapshot with you all.
First things first, you can probably tell from my content that I live in the Washington, D.C. area. More specifically, I live in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, which in my opinion is one of the greatest little towns in the whole wide world. It is packed with historic houses, cobbled streets, independent shops, quality restaurants, and DOGS. DOGS EVERYWHERE.
Speaking of dogs, I started off my day with taking my pup Luna for a long walk through Old Town. I love exploring the city, and I almost always find something I’ve never noticed before. Our usual route for these types of long walks takes us down a few of my favorite streets. Prince Street has both my favorite house (it was burned during the Civil War and you can still see the evidence on the side) and Luna’s favorite flower shop (they have dog bones outside).
Next we go down Lee St., which has my favorite basement window decoration and along the water. This part is so scenic, and I love seeing the archaeological work going on! They recently found a third ship that dates to the mid- to late-1700s on the waterfront, so you can see the grids and tags out.
I definitely worked up an appetite on the walk, so after dropping Luna back at the house, I decided to try a new spot: South Block Juice on Lee St. I stumbled upon it one day on a run, but couldn’t remember exactly where it was for weeks. I re-discovered it and was SO excited to try it! I had a nitro cold brew and the Almond Butter Acai Bowl, both of which were delicious. I really love the vibe there- there’s the cafe, a yoga studio, a shop, and a co-working space, all in the same building. I can definitely see myself going back there A LOT.
On the way home, I decided to stop by one of the cutest shops in Old Town: Penny Post on King St. One of the first times I went inside, I knocked an avalanche of 2039402398 cards off the shelf, so knowing I couldn’t possibly do something more embarrassing, I can confidently browse any time I go in. My closest girlfriend at the office recently moved to New York City and started a new job, so I shopped around and picked out a housewarming/congratulations gift for her. They have a great selection of hilarious cards, desk accessories, wedding planning gifts, and much more.
Ever since I learned my roommate has a juicer, I’ve hopped solidly on the juice bandwagon. On Sundays, I make a big batch of green juice for the week. It honestly doesn’t take that long to do, and I’ve found my juices last for a solid 5-6 days in the fridge! Here’s what I put in my juice (this makes enough for five 8 oz Ball jars):
–1 hothouse cucumber
–3 green apples
–1/2 cup pineapple
–2 lemons
–5 handfuls spinach
–5 handfuls kale
–2 celery stalks
The rest of my day is filled with cleaning, mowing, snuggling with Luna, and planning for the week in my planner. I try to get to bed fairly early on Sunday nights, just since Monday mornings are usually terrible anyway. Every little bit helps, you know?
